Stanley Yelnats is under a curse the curse started with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great grandfather and has since followed all of the Yelnats. Stanley has been sent to a boy's detention center, where he is falsely accused of stealing a $100.00 pair of tennis shoes. Stanley is sent to camp Green Lake, which has no lake but a bunch of holes. The campers spend everyday digging holes five feet wide and five feet deep. The boys are digging holes because Warden is looking for something. But what could be buried in this dried up old lake? As the story develops the reader learns the story behind the holes.

This is a very well written story, which keeps the reader in suspense until the end. I feel that any reader who starts this story will not want to put it down until they find the true meaning of the holes.

I was surprised to find out the meaning of the holes, and I'm sure any one who reads this book will too.

I was interested in the way the story turns out, because I thought he would just dig the holes and go home but he doesn't. And I am sure any one who reads this book will think the same thing. I also think that readers 9 of age and up will appreciate this book, because of the words and it is a little hard to understand the true meaning of the holes at any younger of an age.

My favorite character was Stanley Yeinats because he is the one who discovered the true meaning of the holes. My favorite part was when Mr. Sir says Stanley can run away and he will not shoot him, because Stanley can be free but he doesn't run away.
